The Effect of Occupational Therapy Intervention on Methylmalonic Acidemia in Inborn Error Metabolism: Case Reports

Abstract
Purpose: This report was investigated the effect of occupational therapy for infant with metylmalonic acidemia.

Method: He was diagnosed with methylmalonic acidemia at 2 months. At 6 months, he was evaluated the Denver Developmental Screening Test¥±(DDST ¥±). He was delayed in all areas. We set the goal on ¡®reach to the toy and
then bring it to the mouth in a sitting position with moderate assist¡¯. We applied the reach, regard small objects, bring to the mouth and trunk balance training. At 7 months, he was performed fundoplication and gastrotomy. At 8 months, he was re-evaluated the DDST¥±. The number of items with ¡®Pass¡¯ increased, but delayed in all areas based on the age line. We re-set the goal on ¡®pass the toy from one hand to the other and hold the toy in both hands in a sitting position with minimal assist¡¯. We applied the pass, hold, rake a small objects, and trunk balance training. His overall condition was improved,
he was discharged.

Conclusion: We were able to identify that occupational therapy has s positive effect to the infant with metylmalonic acidemia. This report will be supportive evidence when applying developmental tests and occupational therapy to children
with metylmalonic acidemia.
